The Wrath Sketchbook by Keatopia is actually a character design book featuring two characters, namely The Unseen Darkness and The Thunderous Lightning. They were both turned into sculptures that you may have seen in my earlier interview with Adeeb Islam.

Book Review: The Artist on the Road: Impressions of Greece by Richard Sheppard
The Artist on the Road: Impressions of Greece is the travelogue sketchbook of fine artist and freelance illustrator Richard Sheppard.
It's a day-by-day first person account of the 16-day trip he spent in Greece, at Athens, Elsusis, Mycenae, Delphi, Thebes, Baruron, Sounion, Santorini, Mykonos and Delos. It's quite a lengthy but personal record of the things he saw and felt. Particularly interesting is the way he shares about his insecurities and apprehension of sketching outdoors with people watching.
The watercolour sketches are nice and comes with lots of commentary. He was traveling with his dad and you can read about all the adventures they had together — very typical tourist adventures like getting lost, finding hotels, but fun to read nevertheless.
The book's a 134-page paperback. The softcover does curl up after days. Paper's alright.
Good book to check out if you like travelogues or sketchbooks.

Book Review: Visual Funk: Jim Mahfood Art
Visual Funk: Jim Mahfood Art is a amazing collection of art. Stupendous.
Featured in this 256-page hardcover are some of the best works from his 16-year career. There are illustrations, collages and photographs. The reproduction is wonderful. Illustrations are printed huge often filling a page, or even two. This is a big artbook and it's a joy looking at those artworks large and up close.
I really like what I see, from cover to cover. Jim Mahfood has his own distinct style, one that's bold, confident, graphic, wild, cohesive, expressive, playful, loose, free, creative and fun.
His line art are very lively, with varying thickness. There's a generous use of halftone pattern that you don't usually see in comics nowadays. Oh yes, he has a very strong comic style that you can see just by the page composition and how he poses his characters. Colours are everywhere, chaotic, but still work together as a whole to give a very graphic look. Each page is like a nice surprise.
The photographs included are behind-the-scene shots, body paint models (some nudity involved but painted over) and some of his other creations that cannot be scanned, like wall paintings.
Visual Funk is visually delightful.
Most highly recommended if you like the sketchy but definite comic style.
This is one of my favourite artbooks for 2013.

Book Review: Voyage au Japon - Tome 2: Koyasan
Voyage au Japon - Tome 2: Koyasan the sequel to one of my favourite travelogue sketchbooks, Voyage au Japon, Tome 1: Tokyo.
This time Sandrine Garcia and Rémi Maynègre travel to Koya-San (高野山) or Mount Koya, the mountains in the Wakayama Prefecture to the south of Osaka, to visit the countryside, temples and the largest graveyard in Japan. They recorded their journey from the start with a train from Tokyo to Koyasan, ending just before they leave for Kyoto.
There are paintings of various places they saw while on the train, the scenic countryside with traditional Japanese houses, temples, torii (traditional Japanese gate) along mountain paths, lots of tombs, and on the culture and way of life there.
The book's a large landscape 160-page hardcover. The beautiful watercolour paintings are huge. You get a sense that you're standing at the place there, just like the first book, and it evokes the holiday mood, the urge to book a plane ticket.
The bulk of the paintings are on the temples and tombs. I love the architectural details of the old houses, temples and other buildings. For the tombs and cemetery, you can see many different types, how they are worn from weather, stone guardians, the decorations and offerings put alongside, and the surroundings.
This book looks at the more spiritual side of Japan. It's written in French and Japanese. The tone is rather light-hearted going by some of the humorous depiction of the couple's adventures and short comics. There's one particular double page spread of the cemetery drawn with spirits hiding behind tombstones from the view of the people.
It's a wonderful artbook. Highly recommended to sketchbook and travel lovers.
This is one of my favourite books for 2013.

Book Review: Sketching from the Imagination: An Insight into Creative Drawing
Sketching from the Imagination is a wonderful 320-page paperback collection of sketches from 50 artists. It's always a delight to look through other people sketches, especially the good ones, and there are plenty to see in this thick volume.
The sketches compiled are all drawn from imagination. There are scenes of fantasy, character and creature designs, some location art, sometimes whimsical drawings, loose sketches, detailed sketches, and other amazing line drawings. Majority I would say are still character and creature art. Most of the stuff in the book are good enough as concept art, actually in a sense they all are.
I like checking out the different styles and techniques. There are the cartoony stuff, superhero comics style, amazing pencil and pen hatching, shading, use of black, drawing on toned paper and more. Some you can see are done quickly and loose. Some are very elaborate with detailed designs and shading.
The artists are featured alphabetically. Each has around 6 pages of coverage with a brief commentary on why they sketch and their inspiration. It's not really an instructional book, more for sparks of inspiration. All the sketches also come with brief captions.
I collect a lot of sketchbooks, and I really enjoyed looking through this one.
It's an inspiring book for those who like art, and of course sketchbooks, and probably will get you inspired to start sketching.

Book Review: Barry Herniman's Travelling Sketchbook
I love travelogue sketchbooks and can't get enough of them. I managed to spot this sketchbook from Barry Herniman by chance. I've such good luck. It's a wonderful book.
This guy Barry Herniman is not just an artist but also a musician and an adventurer. He has been on Drakensberg range of mountains, Okavango Swamps, Rhodesia, South America, and a lot of other places with names so exotic that it's the first time I'm hearing about them. It was fun reading through his tales on the road. He's born in England.
This travelogue sketchbook is a collection of sketches that he made in British Isle, Ireland, other countries in Europe, those that are near the Mediterranean. Again, he's been to many places and recorded what he saw in ink and watercolours. Much are of the towns, houses, boats by the river, shorelines, mountain ranges, gardens, a few ruins, and some of the people he met.
I love the watercolour sketches in the book. The colours are lovely and the lines are loose and relaxed. Sometimes the lines would also retrace, i.e. going back the same route, to give the extra sketchy mood. The colours are sometimes saturated, and sometimes they have a nice pastel tone going. I like those with the softer, muted pastel tone, and they seems to give a more idyllic vibe. He has a nice way of splattering colours to give the sketches more textures.
Other than the sketches, there are also some watercolour paintings. The style feels different because of the lack of lines. The quality of work does vary a bit throughout the book. But hey, it's a sketchbook, not an artbook of studio paintings. I enjoy looking every piece, imagining what it would have been like to be the same place.
All the artworks featured are label with short captions.
It's a 144-page hardcover.
I bought my book from Book Depository because it seems to be the cheapest at the time of purchase, and the price includes shipping.
Highly recommended to all those who like sketchbooks and travelogues.

Book Review: David Colman's Doodles Volume III
Here are more doodles from David Colman in the third volume of his sketchbook. It's still hardcover, and the size is about A5 landscape.
The sketches inside are quite substantial as this has 140 pages, more than his earlier sketchbooks. There are really nice caricature animal art, human figure sketches from life, and character designs for films.
I like his fluid and casual line sketches that captures the essence of the characters very well. His animal sketches are of course always a delight to see. He has quite a few animals inside drawn with beautiful soulful eyes.
A marvellous sketchbook.

Book Review: Meanwhile Back in Los Ranchos: An Illustrated Chronicle of Travel, Art, and Finding Home
Meanwhile Back in Los Ranchos is a fairly entertaining travelogue sketchbook from Trisha Ray. a lady from Los Ranchos, New Mexico, United States.
This book is a collection of her traveling adventures from 1970s to 80s. The later dates are vague because the stories are not really dated although they seem to be in chronological order. Her stories flow quite well despite of that.
Trisha Ray has been traveling even before she was 20 years old. She stayed at farm houses, chased sheep, worked for an airline, flew planes, collected grapes, baked, taught English and did a whole lot of odd jobs. To say that she's adventurous is an understatement. She has been to many countries, those in Europe, Southeast Asia, Nepal, India, Turkey, Persia and more.
All the while, she's being recording her adventures and stories with in her journals. The book has two parts, the first are her stories accompanied by coloured saturated watercolour sketches, and the second part has mainly old photographs.
The book's a very interesting account of her traveling life, filled with interesting bits of information, and interaction with all sorts of people. It seems like something is always going on, going wrong. There are stories of plane passengers sleeping on hotel lobby floors because the hotel was full and the plane was faulty, escaping zoo animals and other unexpected turn of events. Mixed in her travel stories are occasional flashbacks to her life in Los Ranchos, hence the title.
There quite a lot to read and take it for a travelogue sketchbook that has 214 pages.
Highly recommended to those who loves travel stories or sketchbooks.

Book Review: Venice: A Watercolor Travel Journal
Here's another beautiful sketchbook by Joaquin Gonzalez Dorao. This one's self published in 2013, printed by CreateSpace. Paperback. 62 pages total. About A4 size.
It's a travelogue sketchbook filled with snapshots of Venice in beautiful watercolour sketches. There are the beautiful buildings by water, gondolas, cafes, people and the intricate architecture of the whole place.
I like how he pulls out the little details for more focus, it could be a cup of coffee, statues, hanging lamps, or the fish sold at the markets. There are captions but too brief though. I would love to read more about the place, or even about his adventures while drawing there.
It's a nice addition to the other Venice sketchbooks that I have, namely A Week In Venice by Liz Steel, The Venice Sketchbook by Fabrice Moireau.

Book Review: The Second in Line by Mattias Adolfsson
My copy of The Second in Line by Mattias Adolfsson is here!
This should go nicely with the other two books that I have, namely The First in Line and Mattias Unfiltered.
I love his pen line watercolour illustrations. This book is yet another wonderful collection of his beautiful artworks, many of which you might have already seen on his blog. Having it in book form feels just much better and different.
The presentation format for this book is different from The First in Line.
There's a cardboard case that opens up to three items inside, a 112-page book plus a 32-page booklet and a poster printed on double side.
These are the two sides to the poster. It's actually the same spaceship but there are some interesting scenario developments that differ from the opposite side.
This is the main book with the stitching exposed.
This is the cover and back cover. The exposed stitching allows for the book to open flat. It's really cool to be able to view the illustrations flat on without the middle curving into the gutter.
Oh, and the book here is of portrait orientation as compared to The First in Line. It allows for the more horizontal pieces to be printed larger, as in the earlier book they were just printed on a single page. So actually there are less artworks featured, but they are bigger.
The main book is a collection of his miscellaneous illustrations. Most of the artworks are from his sketchbooks, but there are also some commissioned pieces.
There are some humorous cartoons mixed with the illustrations.
Delightful whimsical characters are everywhere.
The black booklet features art of interiors.
A very typical scene by Mattias Adolfsson with lots of interesting things to see.
The book cost $44 USD which includes shipping. It's expensive but it's well worth the money.
You can buy it at http://mattiasa.blogspot.se/2013/10/pre-order-second-in-line.html
The First in Line seems to be out of print so definitely get this while stocks last!
Most highly recommended.
It's one of my 2013 favourite artbooks.

Book Review: Drawing on Istanbul 2 by Trici Venola
Special thanks to Çitlembik Publications for mailing me this book for review. I won't have discover it on my own.
The artist Trici Venola is actually from Los Angeles. She fell in love with Turkey in 1999 and started documenting what she saw on her sketchbooks, and more recently online through her Drawing on Istanbul blog. She's drawing and writing all the time.
This sketchbook features selected sketches from 2006 to 2013. It has only 80 pages which is quite surprising because there are so much work on her blog.
The book is of a wide landscape format, size slightly larger than A5 and all the drawings are drawn big. The wide aspect is actually quite a challenging format to use for drawing. Trici Venola drew quite a few pieces vertically which are even more challenging!
The sketches look like they are drawn with pencil. The look is very textural and the perspective and composition has a very inviting vibe. Some feel like they are drawn on locations, while others most likely not, such as the one with the spinning Dervish dancers.
There are sketches of the beautiful places, and close up of the people there going about with their activities. After every few pages, there are stories explaining the sketches, mostly talking about the culture, places, monuments and people. It's a really interesting read, many things are probably not found in tour guidebooks.
This is a wonderful sketchbook and feels very lively. There's even a glowing review by Robert Crumb.
Availability
The book would be distributed by National Book Network and appear on Amazon in February 2014.
It should appear earlier for sale on Nettleberry— they have Drawing on Turkey volume 1.

Book Review: Andrea's Book
I've been following Andrea Joseph's sketchblog for a while now. When I saw that she was coming out with an artbook, I knew I had to grab it.
I bought mine from her Etsy shop but it seems to be out of stock. It was $24 USD + 10 USD for shipping.
Try searching ISBN 9782356391278 on Google, or email her to put more (signed) copies at Etsy.
This is a hardcover sketchbook that's a bit smaller than A5 size. There's a rubber band to hold the covers together, just like some sketchbooks. There are 144 pages.
I love her colour pencil and ballpoint pen art. Her artworks are so fine, and the way she builds the tones are so smooth. There's a particular drawing of folded clothes or fabric that's rendered so nicely I feel touching it to feel how soft they are.
Many of the artworks are from her blog. Her artworks sometimes comes with handwritten text in English, but they are translated into French in this artbook.
Gosh, I even love the handwriting. There's always something that feels personal about handwriting. And there's not just one type of handwriting but several. Lovely. Minor quibble is some of the words from the scanned pages are too small to read.
Beautiful book. Highly recommended.

Book Review: Sketch Your World: Essential Techniques for Drawing on Location
Sketching Your World is a book of sketching tips and techniques from London-based artist, journalist and Urban Sketcher James Hobbs.
This book is focused on outdoor sketching, location sketching or even urban sketching as it's becoming popularly known.
There are 176 pages with 12 chapters. Each chapter has several topics with each around two pages. This book is essentially a bundle of tips really, with some techniques mentioned but not really technical. So it's an easy breezy read.
You'll get the most out of it if you already know some basics to drawing.
The book talks about the various aspects of location sketching. It covers things like dealing with onlookers, training your observational skills, provides examples of places where you can draw and how you should approach drawing them, talks about reportage drawing, using digital tools for sketching, and getting active online to either share your work or check out other urban sketchers. Several artist profiles are featured as well.
Each topic is rather short but there are some interesting ideas and suggestions to work on from reading the tips.
The illustrated examples are nice, nothing too overwhelming or anything that you cannot achieve. It's interesting to look at styles of different artists and how they translate the scenes they see onto paper.
I'll recommend the book to those who like sketching and who are starting to explore location drawing.
There are a few publishers for this book, namely Page One (Asia), North Light Books (US) and Apple Press (UK). The covers are all different. The UK book pricing at the time of this writing is cheaper, so I would recommend getting the UK edition from Book Depository if you want to save some money.
Other books on urban sketching that you should also check out are The Art of Urban Sketching, An Illustrated Journey, Freehand Drawing and Discovery by James Richard and Sketching on Location by Matthew Brehm.
This is the UK version cover.
This is the USA version cover. And the cover of my copy that you see right at the top of the review is the Asia version.

Book Review: Bahamas Sketchbook by Graham Byfield
Graham Byfield continues sketching. His sketchbook from 2013 is drawn in The Bahamas.
It's similar in presentation style to his other sketchbooks. There are the beautiful watercolour paintings from him, and the text is written by Larry Smith who is a Bahamian journalist and columnist.
The book covers the history of the place and makes for a wonderful read. Many of the buildings featured in the sketches were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, and their architecture are still delightful to look at today.
Speaking of architecture, this book is primarily focused on that. While there's mention of the famous Queen's Staircase in Nassau, there's no painting of that.
Looking at the sketches makes me wish that I could visit the place one day.
Beautiful sketchbook. Recommended to those who like sketchbooks and travelogues

Review: Grandluxe Etcetra Sketchbook
This is the Grandluxe Etcetra Sketchbook. It's a hardcover with 80 pages of 180gsm watercolour paper. The cover is clothbound and comes in various colours: blue, green, black, pink. It also comes with an elastic band closure.
It has only landscape orientation and comes in sizes 5.8 x 8.3 inches (about A5), and a smaller size of 4.1 by 5.8 inches.
This was the sketchbook I brought to Cambodia for an intensive sketching trip.
The thing about clothbound sketchbooks is they can get dirty easily. Mine's already quite dirty because I had to put it on the ground sometimes. The clothbound does feel nice to the touch though. But I would prefer non-clothbound sketchbooks in the future.
The actual binding of the sketchbook actually does not attach to the hardcover spine.
This sketchbook uses the glue-type binding. As such, it's not very durable, and in the worst case scenario, the inner cover can actually come off from the glued spine. That's exactly what happened to mine, so I guess I'll have to glue it back again.
In another scenario, if the single pages actually comes off, then it will be quite difficult or even impossible to glue them back.
The pages can open flat and that's great if you like drawing across the gutter for a double page spread.
The paper is 180GSM so it's good enough for watercolour. It absorbs water well and the watercolours looks good.
There's some wrapping when too much water is applied but it's not a big issue. I would not have too many glazes because of the thickness of the paper.
Ink on paper might feather depending on the usage. If you leave your pen tip on the surface for too long, the paper will absorb the ink and feather. If you use brush pen for inking, or apply a larger amount of ink other than drawing lines, then it's going to feather also. So the techniques to prevent feathering with this sketchbook is to always keep your pen moving, and not to use pens that deposit a lot ink — fountains pens are fine but not those that have bigger tips.
Overall, the biggest downside is the glue-type binding that does not hold up to intensive or longtime use. This sketchbook is good for casual or watercolour practice, but if you want something lasting, I would recommending checking out other sketchbooks.

Book Review: Draw Occupy Wall Street
Draw Occupy Wall Street is one of the more powerful piece of journalistic or reportage work I've seen.
From 20 October to 20 November 2011, Joshua Boulet from Texas went over to Manhattan to cover the Occupy Wall Street movement. He's a comic artist and "wanted an adventure" so he decided to take up the challenge to draw the protest movement.
He slept where the protesters were sleeping, he ate what they were eating, and he also cooked for them among other activities that he had to do while living in the tent city.
He drew with his brush and pen the detailed scenes he witnessed, and also wrote about his experience there. Through his commentary, you'll learn about what it's like there on the ground, to be with the people protesting against the greed of Wall Street. It's interesting to find out how the events unfold and also he made it through the 30 days at Zuccotti Park. The artwork is amazing and put you right at the scene.
