Hand Drawn Halifax: Portraits of the city's buildings, landmarks, neighbourhoods and residents - 01

Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia, Maritime province in Canada. That's where the author and artist Emma Fitzgerald now lives.

Hand Drawn Halifax is a charming sketchbook that captures the sights and scenes, buildings and everyday life of the city. The sketches are lively, loose and childlike in a way that they actually reminded me of Quentin Blake's style. These are sketches drawn on location with the colours added digitally later on.

Each place or building featured is accompanied by a short history or the author's interaction with people she meets while drawing. She talks about the architecture, such as the Halifax Central Library that's designed to look like a stack of books, discovers a church that houses a concert at night, or talks about people dressing for prom, pitching a tent they bought online and other things she sees on the streets.

Showing the places through sketches and observations has a nice personal touch. I enjoy reading and finding out about the neighbourhood and people.

It's a lovely sketchbook. 128 pages, hardcover.

Fantastic Cities: A Coloring Book of Amazing Places Real and Imagined - 01

The colouring book craze is still going on. Few days ago, I was at the local bookstore Basheer Graphic Arts and they have a shelf space dedicated to only colouring books. Even Asian colouring books are coming out.

Fantastic Cities caught my attention because it was the largest colouring book on the shelf, about 11.5 by 11.5 inches. It has 60 pages.

I did not buy this book to colour. I bought this book because the illustrations inside are awesome, I love cityscapes and, the pen and ink style is wonderful.

On each page is a huge detailed artwork of a city scene, either real or imagined. Those drawings based on real life is the best because you can really get to see how these cities look and feel like. The imagined pieces are work of art by themselves as well, often using perspective to create patterns out of building elements. I like that the lines are slightly wobbly because that gives them a nice characteristic.

Steve Mcdonald's simple style of just using lines to draw everything appeals to me because that's a style that I use often as well, although never to such large scale. But seeing how good these artworks are is really inspiring and makes me want to draw like that as well.

I would highly recommend this not just as a colouring book but also as a sketchbook.

Book Review: The Third in Line by Mattias Adolfsson

The Third in Line by Mattias Adolfsson - 01

This is Mattias Adolfsson's fourth published sketchbook and as expected, it's just wonderful.

The 144-page hardcover sketchbook collects the illustrations that he has created on his blog after the release of this earlier book The Second in Line that was out in 2013.

While you can see the beautiful artworks on his blog, it's feel so much better to have a hard copy in hand.

The stitch binding of the book is exposed, and it's able to open flat so you can see the drawings in their full glory. When the book is open flat, the front and back cover will combine to form a sketch.

Mattias Adolfsson has also reprinted his earlier In Line series sketchbooks so if you missed the chance to get them, you can do so now. He has also put out a thick compilation book that collects all the three In Line books. So if you don't have his other books, getting that limited edition 3-in-1 book might be a better choice, and also cheaper.

All the books are sold only on his website.

Highly recommended.

Here & There (Again) by Miguel Herranz - 01

With some good luck, I was able to see and successfully back Miguel Herranz's sketchbook Here & There (again that was put up on the crowd funding website Verkami. I probably saw the news that he's coming up with the sketchbook from either his Flickr page or Facebook page.

Miguel Herranz, aka Freekhand by some, is a sketcher and illustrator from Spain. I've been following his work ever since I picked up outdoor sketching several years ago. His sketches are amazing and it's really inspiring to see them get published.

I really like his composition and confident strokes. He's also quite meticulous. The writings on some pages add a nice textural feel to the pages.

I'm not sure if there are extra copies available after the crowd funding campaign so you have to ask him yourself. He only printed limited copies for the backers.

Below are some preview pages from the sketchbook.

Review: USKbook aka Urban Sketch Book by Sennelier

$

Here's the sketchbook that I used yesterday for the panorama sketch at Singapore River.

This is called the USKbook, aka Urban Sketch Book that's made my Sennelier.

It's a 4 by 6 inches accordion page sketchbook with 10 pages on one side, and 8 on the other.

The cover is cloth-bound with some sort of design stamped onto it. It's small, lightweight, and easy to carry around.

The paper is smooth textured, somewhat like cartridge paper. There's no mention whether or not it can take watercolour, but at 340gsm it certainly works well with light washes as I've tried. I will not put more than 3 layers on the surface though. 3 layers seems like the limit at which the paper surface will start to get mushy.

Downside of the sketchbook is the gutter. The paper surface breaks at the fold because the paper's too thick. So the inside of the paper, the part beneath the paper surface, can be seen.

When you apply watercolour, the watercolour will bleed through to the other side. Personally, I would not want to use both sides because if I use the other side, the watercolour will bleed through and affect the art on the other side.

The smooth surface works well for ink also. I tried gel pen and fountain pen. Lines appear sharp and there's no feathering.

Overall, I think it's a good and fun sketchbook to use. You can use it for panorama sketches or collage of many smaller sketches. The downside is the gutter where water or ink can bleed through. The sketchbook is best used only on one side, and that can make the sketchbook pricey to use. I bought this on Amazon and it doesn't ship directly to Singapore so I have to spend extra money for shipping and overall, it cost more than if I were to get a Moleskine Japanese album.

4 out of 5 stars.

How to Keep a Sketch Journal: A Guide to Observational Drawing and Keeping a Sketchbook - 01

This is a book of tips for those who want to start journaling or keep a sketchbook diary. The book is actually the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign from June 2015. The campaign had other goodies options such as a leather cover and a hardback watercolour journal.

This softcover book is designed to look like a sketchbook filled with lots of interesting sketches. It's not a big book, around A5 size, and there are only 112 pages.

The book's split into two parts. The first part talks about the different tools you can use for drawing, and the second part features 8 different artists who shares their own sketching tips.

The artists that are featured are:

I can't believe they actually manage to get Maja Waronska to contribute. She's an amazing watercolour artist and actually the book only talks about the sketching and did not feature her breathtaking watercolour paintings.

Overall, it's quite an insightful book. There are lots of useful but brief tips and ideas from the contributing artists. The book's for beginners and you'll get the most out of it if you have basic drawing skills.

I like the format of the book. I just wish that they had featured more artists to make the book thicker, which would have made the book more worth the money.

This is Then, That Was Now: A Sketchbook Memoir - 01

I just received Steven Reddy's second sketchbook a few days ago. Just like his first sketchbook, this was also put on Kickstarter and was successfully funded.

This new book collects new and old artworks. The new ones are those created since the launch of the first sketchbook. The old ones are mainly the autobiographical comics dating from way back when he first started drawing. There are also some unfinished sketches.

The autobiography comics are pretty interesting, and so are the stories included throughout the book. There's quite a lot to read and you'll be able take an intimate look at Steven Reddy's life, such as where he brings his date, the his pet rat, places he has been to, questions asked by his students and more. One interesting thing is he has been using the same drawing materials his entire life, which is probably when the style and look of his work is so uniquely his.

In addition to his location sketches and comics, he also shares his sketching tips and drawing process. Certain parts of what was covered in his Craftsy course Dynamic Detail in Pen, Ink and Watercolor are included in the book.

It's very inspiring to look at this 288-page thick volume of work.

With the success of the Kickstarter, Steven Reddy has also reprinted his first sketchbook. So both the books are now available at https://www.etsy.com/shop/StevenReddy

Cambridge: The Watercolour Sketchbook - 01

Graham Byfield's latest book collects the watercolour sketches he made at the university town Cambridge.

I really enjoyed looking at the campus, all the wonderful architecture, and reading all about the history behind. The pencil and watercolour sketches are lovely. Graham Byfield's style of watercolour is more subtle compared to other artists and evokes a softer feeling.

There are a lot of places featured, basically all around Cambridge. There's also a few pages of writeup by Marcus Binney on the town, gown and the academic world. In addition to the buildings, there are also sketches of people, such as City Rangers sticking posters on railings, cyclists and even the Hop-on-and-off tourist bus.

This book makes me want to go there for sketching as well.

I noticed that the book is published by Laurence King Publishers instead of Editions Didier Millet that have been publishing all these travelogue-style sketchbooks all along.

Book Review: Watercolors of Paris by Joaquin Dorao

Watercolors of Paris by Joaquin Dorao - 01

I'm very jealous of Joaquin Gonzalez Dorao (website | blog | Facebook). To be able to travel and paint is one of the best things an artist can ask for. And Joaquin already has several books to his name. The other two sketchbooks I have are on Venice and Cadiz.

Watercolors of Paris is a self published 100-page paperback that collects the sketches from Paris. I've several sketchbooks on Paris and yet I'm still able to learn new things and see new places with his book. The main attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Arc De Triomphe are along with many more, including the lesser known areas and buildings that are still historically significant.

Going through the sketchbook really made me determined to go for a sketching trip in Paris in the future. The watercolour sketches are wonderful and they are accompanied by informative text on the locations and culture. I like the way the artworks are collaged together.

Highly recommended to sketchbook lovers.

Book Review: Drawn: The Art of Ascent

Drawn: The Art of Ascent - 01

I spotted this book accidentally on Amazon and knew I had to get it. This book wasn't on my radar and appeared out of nowhere.

Drawn: The Art of Ascent is actually a travelogue journal of climbing expeditions by Jeremy Collins. Collected within are wonderful stories, beautiful hand drawn art and photo collages.

The book focuses on four main climbs in different continents. Collins is an adventurer at heart and one who really loves climbing mountains. I can sense his enthusiasm through the pages, words and the art. He also loves his family and he calls the situation he's in as living in a love paradox. He mentions that he misses his family at night while he's outside sleeping under the open sky. I found that to be touching.

When his friend died during an avalanche in China, he brought along his friend's ashes to scatter at the summits he scaled.

The storytelling is fantastic. He describes his adventures in detail with beautiful imagery, either drawn or in words, the people he meets, his climbing buddies and the mountains he climbs.

There's also tension in the book. You won't know until the next page whether he had made a slip or his gear came loose to send him tossing down the side of the mountain. It happened a few times and that really made for some tense reading. I finished the book in one sitting as I wasn't able to put down the book.

I can only imagine how awe-inspiring it is to be standing at the foot of mountains, and how amazing it is to be able to scale one.

The stories moved me. The last time I felt that way was after I read Cambodia & Angkor: A Travel Sketchbook, When Wanderers Cease to Roam and The Photographer: Into War-torn Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders. These are some of the best travelogue sketchbooks in my opinion.

Highly recommended.

Brasil Acuarelas de Viaje (Spanish Edition) - 01

I like the sketchbooks of Joaquin Gonzalez Dorao but I think I made a mistake by getting the Spanish edition. After I reviewed some of his earlier sketchbooks that were translated to English, I realised that it's more enjoyable to be able to read the captions.

This is a 96-page paperback that's self published. It features the different places in Brazil, such as Jericoacoara, Bahia, Brasilia, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Foz Do Iguacu.

The only place I know of in Brazil is Rio de Janeiro so it's great to be able to see other places that I did not know exist. There are sketches of the streets, buildings, people, maps and other miscellaneous things, like statues or the cobblestones pavements. The watercolour sketches are beautiful and so are the different places featured. I guess to put Brazil as one of the places to visit in the future too.

Recommend to sketchbook lovers.

Review: Khadi Papers 210gsm Watercolour Sketchbook (Hardcover)

$
0
0

Now that I've filled up half the sketchbook, I can review it properly. There are things that might be missed if I had only used a few pages and wrote the review. I take a long time to review sketchbooks because they need a long time to review.

Khadi Papers are from India and they are noted for their handmade paper, among other paper products.

Their sketchbook comes in different sizes:

  • HB3 - 28 x 35cm
  • HB4 - 21 x 25cm
  • HB5L - 13 x 32cm
  • HB5 - 13 x 16cm

Mine's the HB4 which measures 21 by 25cm. It opens to a wide 50cm which has twice the width for the height, great for panorama sketches, however you have to draw across the gutter. If you don't want to draw panorama across the gutter, there's the smaller HB5L which is 13 by 32cm.

Paper's 100% cotton, acid-free. As for the paper surface, there's ROUGH and SMOOTH (actually coldpress).

The cover is quite thick and is wrapped with some sort of horizontal striped paper. There are some paper fiber off from the cover. I actually kinda like it compared to the standard black cover sketchbooks that I have. However if you use it often enough, more paper fiber will come off from the cover, especially if you're drawing on a sweaty lap.

There's also the option for paperback. A hardcover is easier to use because there's a backing to draw on.

There are 80 pages in the sketchbook. Many places online list the number of pages incorrectly.

It's not a thick sketchbook because the paperweight is just 210gsm. They are mostly of the same thickness but some pages can feel thinner and some thicker.

Pages are deckle edge on one side and it looks nice. I've lost count of the number of people who commented about the deckle edge when they first saw the sketchbook.

The sketchbook opens flat which is great for drawing across the gutter, and also scanning. I've been using it for a few months and the stitching still holds up fine.

Sometimes, I do note that the watercolour from previous pages will seep through those stitching holes and affect other pages.

It is okay if the colours seep and affect coming pages because you have the option to sketch on single pages rather than across the gutter. However if the colour seep and affect previous pages, it would damage your earlier sketches. I find the binding tightness satisfactory. If you bind it too tight, it will be difficult to open flat. If it's too loose, then you'll have more paint seeping to other pages.

The paper is tub-sized with gelatin. I find the sizing to be inconsistent for some pages. In the picture above, the pages are from different sheets of paper and the watercolour appears different on them even though the same colour was used. The page on the right is not properly sized and has more white of the paper showing through.

Here's another example of a sketch drawn on pages that are not properly sized. You can click for a larger view.

Overall, the paper handles watercolour very well. It can take multiple layers of water with no problems. It absorbs water well and stay wet longer. This is great for those who like wet on wet techniques because the colours blend beautifully.

Paper may buckle slightly with heavy washes but if you close the sketchbook, the pages will be flatten again overnight.

The coldpress surface produces very nice granulation textures. There is no discernible pattern.

Another downside is sometimes the paper surface may have fiber sticking out. It will create unwanted effects when you use watercolour over it. So far, for half the sketchbook, I've seen two pages being affected.

It's important to a finger over the paper surface to check for those unwanted paper fiber before painting.

Overall, I really enjoyed using this sketchbook despite the downsides. Of course, the best is still a handmade sketchbook with your own choice of paper but that's more expensive.

It works well with pen and ink most of the time. There's one time on one page at the corner I had ink feathering, but that's probably because that portion wasn't sized properly. Oops, another downside.

I like that the paper is white and colours appear vibrant. It's mention elsewhere online that the paper is off-white, having a light cream shade, but I find it more white than creamy.

The sketchbook is priced reasonably in my opinion, from a range of £10 to £28 depending on size, for the number of pages. However, the overall cost will be higher because of the shipping. The sketchbook is from India and shipping cost makes up a significant portion to the total cost. I bought mine from Amazon and in total, I probably paid USD $40 with shipping. So that's like $1 for every two pages.

Anyway, this Khadi Papers sketchbook is near the top of my must-buy list when it comes to watercolour sketchbooks.

My Journey to Machu Picchu, Peru - 01

I bought another one of Mike Daikubara's sketchbook. This time it's a travelogue sketchbook from his trip to Machu Picchu, one of the most famous sites in the world.

This paperback sketchbook is self-published with 76 pages. It's about A5 size in landscape format.

Collected within are sketches, photographs and stories from the trip. The sketches are lovely and really evoked the holiday mood in me. I wish I could go there some day. Mike even drew the layout for various hotels he stay in, including all the items and their prices from in the mini-bar. That's just how he sketches hotel rooms.

Of course, there's the iconic scene of Machu Picchu being captured. Other sketches are from different summits, from the foot of the hills, on the road, from villages and towns. There are also sketches of people living there and what they do for a living. The accompanying captions provides a wonderful glimpse into life of the locals.

I wished there were more pages. It's another nice travelogue to add to my collection.

All the Buildings in London: That I've Drawn So Far - 01

All the Buildings in London is the second book in the All the Buildings Drawn series by James Gulliver Hancock from Australia. The first book featured New York buildings.

I love the simple and stylized look that James has used for his drawings. He has a nice way of simplifying the details and yet retain the essence of the buildings. Many are drawn on location while he's cycling around while others are drawn from reference photos. Either way, the drawings are beautiful. I also like the extra squiggly lines, blots, splashes and stylized clouds that he uses around the buildings to add that bit of liveliness.

Expect to see iconic buildings and monuments like the Buckingham Palace, St Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Royal Albert Hall, London Eye and many more. This product of drawing all the buildings is ongoing and you can see the latest drawings at http://allthebuildingsinlondon.com

It's a wonderful book for sketchbook lovers. I hope to see more in the future.

Imaginefx Sketchbooks Vol 3 - 01

This is the third volume for the sketchbook series from ImagineFX.

Once again, the featured artists and their sketches are just a pleasure to look at. Most of the artworks are just sketches, however they are very detailed sketches. A few are coloured pieces.

The sketches are mostly concept sketches of character design. It's very inspiring, awe-inspiring at times, and inspirational.

It goes without saying that I highly recommend it. The book's in magazine format so it uses magazine quality paper (that you see in ImagineFX magazines). There are 180 pages.

It's available at https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/design-guides-and-specials/sketch...

If you like this sketchbook, I recommend you check out Kim Jung Gi's sketchbooks and the Sketching From Imagination series.

Mechs and the City: Another Book of Drawings by Ian McQue - 01

Mechs and the City is the second self published sketchbook from Ian McQue. Check out the first sketchbook if you haven't. Both are now currently available on his online store. I thought the first volume had run out but it seems that it's back now.

Anyway, I love the pen and ink sketches of these guy. Even though there are so many hatching lines, the designs and scenes still read so clearly. The strokes are confident and bold, drawings are beautiful. I recommend this to anyone who like sketchbooks.

There are only 66 pages though. I wished where were more.

I bought this for £28.50 including shipping to Singapore. It took more than one and a half months. I thought it won't be arriving but it's here.

Book Review: Start Sketching Start Drawing by David Tsnen

Start Sketching Start Drawing by David Tsnen - 01

My friend David Tsnen from Urban Sketchers Singapore has released his sketchbook Start Sketching Start Drawing recently. It's a 178-page paperback that collects sketches he has drawn over the years and also his thoughts and tips on drawings.

The sketches are split into different subject matter, such as urban sketching, landscape, zen stuff, abstract, mountains, trees, and other nature subjects. His style reminds me of the Chinese style of drawings. He likes to use brief lines, brushes and ink washes. One characteristic of Chinese style paintings is sometimes it's difficult to understand the perspective, for example you can't find the vanishing point. I enjoy looking through the book. It's interesting to see the style from people because it's like an extension of themselves.

The last few pages of the books feature some helpful sketching tips.

The book's published by Basheer Graphic Books and you can find it at their store and probably other bookstores in Singapore.

The Art of Sketching: 400 Years of Travel Diaries - 01

I wasn't able to read this book without feeling sleepy. The writing style is academic and similar to those used my museums to describe their work.

Here's one of many reference to the travel diary:

The journey that a travel diary focuses on is the pivot of its iconographic narration. The desire of the explorer to share his or her discoveries engenders the writing of the story, the compiling of fragments and the representation of the things seen. Illustrated reports disseminate knowledge of terrae incognitae, popularize natural and geographical discoveries and bear witness to the horizons and the world beyonds the seas and physical and mental borders.

In general, the book looks at the role of travel diaries, or travelogues, as they have been used in history and how they have evolved to present day. It also looks at the subject matter, and also the different ways they have been used, such as for reportage, recording heritage or history, or just as a way to record memories from a holiday trip.

The last section of the book features a gallery with artists who keep travelogues. This is the most interesting section to me because it's always fun to look at other people's sketchbooks. Many of the artists included are those that I do not know of so it's great. In the recent years, there's this increase in the number of urban sketching books and in those books you usually see the same artists submitting their works. It's not the case here. However, the downside is this section is quite brief compared to other parts of the book.

Overall, there's a lot of text to go through. I've no problem with text except when they are not written for the layman. Books like An Illustrated Life or An Illustrated Journey also have plenty of text but they are written in a more accessible manner and I enjoyed them much more.

So if you want to explore the origins of travel diaries or travelogues, perhaps you might find this book helpful. For someone who's looking for inspiration or likes looking at other people's art, there are many better other options out there.
